How to Keep It Together Every Day

Most people can pull together a great outfit when the occasion calls for it.

A wedding. A party. A presentation. A job interview.

When there's an important event in the diary, we naturally put a little more thought into what we're wearing. We plan ahead, think about the impression we want to create and make sure everything works together.

But what about the other 95% of our lives?

The school drop-off. The sports match. A day at the office. Running errands. Meeting a friend for coffee.

How do some people always seem to look like they have it together, even on an ordinary Tuesday?

The answer is usually much simpler than you think.

It's Not About Dressing Up

A few weeks ago, I was standing on the sidelines at one of my son's sporting matches when another parent jokingly commented that I looked "dressed up" for the occasion.

The funny thing was that I was wearing almost exactly the same thing as everyone else.

Jeans. A simple t-shirt. Comfortable shoes.

The difference wasn't the outfit.

The difference was the finishing touches.

I'd added a scarf, a pair of earrings and a well-cut trench coat. That's it.

It was a perfect example of what I call "finesse".

Looking put together isn't always about wearing something completely different. Often it's about taking the same foundation pieces and adding those small details that elevate the overall look.

The belt.

The watch.

The scarf.

The earrings.

The coat.

The details that communicate thought, intention and confidence.

Step 1: Determine Your Look

One of the biggest mistakes people make is buying clothes without a clear vision of how they want to look.

Spend some time collecting images that appeal to you. Save Pinterest images, magazine clippings or screenshots from brands whose style resonates with you.

Look for common themes.

Do you gravitate towards relaxed tailoring?

Classic neutrals?

Colourful statement pieces?

Minimalist dressing?

Having a visual reference point helps you make better decisions and creates consistency across your wardrobe.

Step 2: Work Out What You Already Have

Before buying anything new, take stock of what is already hanging in your wardrobe.

Be honest about what you wear and what you don't.

Pay particular attention to the pieces you reach for repeatedly.

Why do they work?

Why do you feel good in them?

Understanding what already serves you well is one of the fastest ways to refine your personal style.

At the same time, remove the items that no longer fit, flatter or reflect who you are today.

Step 3: Create Your Own Outfit Formula

Most stylish people don't reinvent the wheel every morning.

They have formulas.

Perhaps it's tailored trousers, a knit and loafers.

Maybe it's jeans, a blazer and a great sneaker.

Or a dress, denim jacket and statement earrings.

Start creating combinations from pieces you already own and take photos of successful outfits.

Having a personal look book on your phone can make getting dressed significantly easier on busy mornings.

Step 4: Identify the Gaps

Once you've started creating outfits, you'll quickly notice what's missing.

The interesting thing is that it's often not another dress, pair of jeans or blouse.

It's the pieces that bring everything together.

A quality belt.

A versatile jacket.

A pair of polished shoes.

A handbag that works with multiple outfits.

Accessories are often the hardest-working pieces in a wardrobe because they stretch everything else further.

Step 5: Master the Finishing Touches

This is where the magic happens.

The difference between looking dressed and looking put together often comes down to the final 10%.

A simple outfit can be completely transformed with:

• A quality belt• Jewellery• A structured handbag• A scarf• A watch• Great outerwear• Polished footwear

These finishing touches don't need to be expensive. They simply need to be intentional.

When people tell me I always look "dressed up", they're usually not responding to the clothing itself.

They're responding to the finishing.

Step 6: Repeat Season After Season

Creating a wardrobe that works isn't a one-off exercise.

As each season arrives, review what worked, what didn't and what gaps remain.

Over time you'll find yourself buying less, making smarter choices and building a wardrobe that feels cohesive and effortless.

You'll stop chasing trends and start investing in pieces that genuinely support your lifestyle and personal brand.

Keeping it together every day isn't about having more clothes.

It's not about being perfectly groomed or looking like you've stepped out of a magazine.

It's about having a plan.

It's about knowing what works for you.

And it's about understanding that sometimes the difference between looking ordinary and looking exceptional is simply a scarf, a great coat and a little attention to detail.

Style isn't built through grand gestures. It's built through consistency, intention and the finishing touches.

With style,

Caitlin
