The "Blue Trap" in Men's Styling

Walk through the CBD at 8:30am and you’ll see it.

A sea of navy and light blue.

Blue suits. Blue shirts. Blue blazers. Safe, familiar, and for many men… completely over-relied on.

It’s what I often refer to as the "blue trap".

Lately, I’ve had several of my male clients come to me wanting to refine their style and diversify how they present. When we open the wardrobe, it’s almost entirely blue. Blue is a brilliant base. It’s reliable, professional, suits many skin tones and easy to wear.

But when it becomes all that you wear, it can be, let's face it, a little boring.

If you’re used to reaching for a navy blazer as your default, there are a few understated alternatives that can work just as hard:

  • Deep burgundy or maroon

Rich, grounded, and surprisingly versatile. It pairs seamlessly back with light blue shirts, white shirts, navy trousers, and denim.

  • Dark teal

One of the most underrated colours in men’s wardrobes. It carries the same versatility as navy but feels more considered, working across both professional and smart casual settings.

  • Chocolate brown

Often overlooked, but incredibly effective and seasonally current. It brings warmth and depth, while still holding authority. It works effortlessly with blues, whites, and softer neutrals, making it easy to integrate.

  • Charcoal in a textured fabrication

Not your standard flat suit. Think hopsack, brushed wool, or a subtle weave. It gives you variation and interest without introducing more colour, which is often the easiest first step for more conservative wardrobes. It also looks killer with a navy trouser.

When everything is blue, everything starts to feel the same.

Introducing one or two alternative base colours or textures in something as simple as a jacket creates contrast, interest, and a stronger sense of personal style, without overcomplicating your wardrobe.

It also allows you to maintain a cohesive look while subtly standing apart, which, in a professional environment, is often exactly the balance you want.

If you were to add just two pieces this season start with 2 foundational jackets:

A burgundy or chocolate blazer. A dark teal or textured charcoal jacket.

You could integrate them into your existing wardrobe immediately, pairing them back with everything you already own.

Often a huge overhaul is not required, just a few small changes. Chances are one of these tones will fit perfectly in a classic blue or neutral wardrobe and provide the perfect men's styling elevation.
